  2. AD 122 Bus Service (seasonal). The Hadrian’s Wall Country Bus makes it easy to explore our Roman heritage and get out and about in some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes. Sit back and relax as it takes you to enjoy the sights and sounds of Hadrian’s Wall by bus. The AD122 takes you back into Roman times where you can visit some of the highlights of Hadrian’s Wall Country. Drop off and pick up at any stop, stay and enjoy a sight before picking up a later bus.
  3. Free County Council parking. Some short stay parking is now free is places like Hexham and Morpeth. All you have to display is a disc in the window. These are available from local businesses, libraries and information centres. Pick one up and keep it in the car just in case.
  4. Pay and display car parks. There is a daily car parking charge of £4 per vehicle, per day, but tickets are transferable between Northumberland National Park car parks along the route of Hadrian’s Wall.   5. Trains. We are working hard to rebuild the long closed railway station at Gilsland. In the meanwhile the nearest train station is either Brampton (very rural) or Haltwhistle (best, with public transport and taxis). At Haltwhistle (5 miles away approx.) you will be able to connect with other local services to Gilsland. The Tyne Valley Line is one of the most scenic in the country and also the site of the earliest passenger services in the country.
  6. Buses. The 185 bus service between Carlisle and Newcastle calls at Gilsland.
  7. By road. Please see the map below for directions. Gilsland is just off the A69 which connects Carlisle and Newcastle and thus has good links to the A1 in the East and the M6/M74 in the West.
  8. Fuel. The nearest petrol station is on the A69 at Low Row Service Station. CA8 2JE.  8 minutes by car, 4.6 miles away.
  9. Walk. On the Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail (84 miles) Gilsland makes an ideal place to stop, rest, eat and drink.
  10. Cycle. Gilsland is on many cycle routes including the Hadrian's Cycle route which is part of National Cycle Route 72.
